A Honeymoon to Last a Lifetime

Date: 2/28/2011

Location: Kona Village

Size: 12" x 14"

Medium: Oil on stretched canvas

Artist's Comments: I can only image how fantastic a honeymoon at the Kona Village Resort must be to experience as a "mainlander". The best day of your life enhanced by a trip to paradise where the hustle and bustle of the big day melts away to time alone lounging in your hale enjoying listening the soft waves lapping against the shoreline. It is truly one of the only times everything is on hold and all you have to do is enjoy each other's company 100%. I was commissioned to paint Hale SH2 where good friends of my parents honeymooned many years ago. I hope it brings them back to that fabulous time under the shade of their thatched roof; walking barefoot along soft sand pathways to their only obligation - dining in paradise. In this painting I mixed both the pallett knife and traditional brushwork techniques. Interestingly, I am noticing a signature style developing with this mixture of techniques. Traditionally the darkest shades are painted with the thinest layers but here, I am reserving the darkest shadow areas for the thickest pallet knife techniques. I look forward to how this signature style develops!

Wacky Palms

Date: 2/11/2011

Location: Mauna Lani

Size: 16" x 8"

Medium: Oil on stretched canvas

Artist's Comments: I was invited to join my in-laws for a day at the Mauna Lani Beach Club; frolicking in the small protected bay with my little nephews. I brought my painting gear along hopefully for interesting subject matter. When I arrived, I found the beach spectacular for beach-goers but un-enticing for a plein air artist and even more unattractive for a light-skinned red head! Luckily we found some beach cabanas to retreat out of the strong sunshine and as I laid back in the cool shade, my eyes were drawn to the outline of palm trees contrast against the skyline. I was immediately inspired and so happy to find something that I wanted to paint. Immediately I decided to go wild with my color pallet; using some bright cheerful colors to go along with the shimmering palm leaves – I suspect the chilled Stella Artois helped somewhat in motivating me to get started! Regardless I painted the trees with my traditional brushwork and used my new pallet knife technique for the skyline. The texture allowed me to give a little punch to an otherwise smooth and somewhat un-exciting background.
